International Homeroom is thrilled to report that since September 2011 we raised approximately $6800.00 to provide and deliver 700 schoolbags filled with supplies to needy school children in Bangladesh. We are excited to continue this project into 2012 and have plans to provide similar services to educational communities in need all over the world.
In creating the schoolbag project, we hoped to inspire these children to complete their primary education. Illiteracy and dropout rates in Bangladesh which are at alarming levels. Education is key in any nation engaged in breaking the cycle of poverty. By addressing the problem of education we feel we are making one of the most important investments possible in the future of the country.
Our efforts were accelerated by utilizing our connections in a network of individuals here in the U.S with ties to Bangladesh; our own extended community. Our volunteers traveled to Bangladesh, donating their travel costs, and once there took advantage of familiarity with the country and, purchasing the schoolbags and a favorable exchange rate.
Each schoolbag was filled with 6 notebooks for each subject, 1 pack of pens, 1 pack of pencils, 1 pack of colored pencils, 1 ruler, 1 pencil case and 2 erasers. An individual back home giving at our basic level donation of $25 paid for almost three of these bags for students who desperately need them!
In the process of executing this project we learned of many more serious challenges facing the schools of Bangladesh. Dilapidated structures, lack of school materials or even running water, proper sanitation or nutrition are just some of these problems. In 2012 and further years we hope to make a difference to these communities by directly providing the schools with the resources and materials they need, doing the leg-work to procure and deliver them as we did with the schoolbags. Please consider helping in this important effort today in whatever capacity you can!
